Backroom

Purchase orders, receiving and stock takes for Shopify stores that hold physical stock. The workflow Shopify retired with Stocky, rebuilt to be simple: see what to reorder, send the order, scan the delivery in, count the shelves.

Features

Fill shelves — suggested orders per supplier

Backroom looks at how fast each item sells, what is on the shelf and on order, and each supplier's lead time. It suggests how much to order from every supplier so you stay in stock through the lead time plus your chosen days of cover. Edit the quantities and create the purchase orders in one click — one per supplier.

Purchase orders

Draft, ordered, partially received, received, closed. Print a PO, email it to the supplier with a PDF attached, download the PDF, export CSV, or print a receiver document with retail prices for the back room. Set supplier SKUs, pack sizes and unit costs per product.

Receiving by barcode scan

Unpack the delivery with your phone camera or a USB/Bluetooth scanner. Each scan adds one; or type quantities. Received units go straight into Shopify inventory at the location you choose, and unit costs can be updated at the same time. Print shelf labels for anything that arrived without a barcode.

Stock takes

Count a vendor, a product type, a location or the whole store. Scan or type, see every discrepancy before you commit, then correct Shopify on-hand quantities in one click. Print a count sheet for a paper count.

Built for physical stores

Works with Shopify POS locations, multiple locations and any barcode scanner. No POS Pro subscription required. Runs inside the Shopify admin on desktop and phone.

How the suggestions work

For each product variant at a location:

Out-of-stock items that were selling are flagged first; items that will run out before a delivery could arrive are flagged next.

Common questions

Is this a Stocky replacement? Yes. Suggested orders, purchase orders, receiving and stock takes are the parts of Stocky retailers used every week; Backroom covers all of them and imports your Stocky purchase orders and product costs. See Switching from Stocky.

Does it change my Shopify inventory? Only when you receive a delivery or complete a stock take. Suggestions and purchase orders never touch stock on their own.

Where are purchase orders stored? In Backroom, because Shopify does not expose purchase orders through its API. They are yours, exportable as CSV at any time.

Can an AI assistant use it? Yes — Backroom has an MCP server and a JSON API so Claude, ChatGPT or your own automation can read suggestions, create purchase orders and receive deliveries with your permission. See API & AI assistants.

Pricing? Two plans, every feature in both. Free: up to 3 purchase orders and 1 stock take a month, unlimited receiving, labels, suppliers, reports and the weekly email — no time limit. Standard: $29/month, unlimited everything, 14-day free trial. Billed through Shopify; switch or cancel any time.
