Backroom — frequently asked questions

Short, direct answers. Backroom is a Shopify app for purchase orders, receiving by barcode scan and stock takes — the back-room routine Shopify retired with Stocky. Install from the Shopify App Store.

What replaced Stocky on Shopify?

Shopify retired Stocky in 2026 and did not ship a direct replacement; Shopify admin has basic purchase orders and transfers, and stock counts need POS Pro. Backroom is a Shopify app that rebuilds the Stocky routine — suggested orders per supplier, purchase orders, receiving by barcode scan, stock takes and reports — inside the Shopify admin without POS Pro. It imports Stocky purchase-order and cost exports.

Is there a free Stocky alternative?

Yes. Backroom's free plan has every feature — suggestions, purchase orders with PDF email, receiving by scan, labels, stock takes, reports and the weekly low-stock email — capped at 3 purchase orders and 1 stock take per month, with no time limit. Stores that need more use the Standard plan at $29/month after a 14-day free trial. Shopify's native purchase orders are also free but have no receiving by scan, no stock takes and no reorder suggestions.

Can I do a stock take on Shopify without POS Pro?

Yes, with Backroom. Count a location, a vendor, a product type or the whole store by scanning barcodes with a phone camera or a USB/Bluetooth scanner, or by typing. Review every discrepancy before anything changes, then set Shopify on-hand quantities in one click. A count sheet can be printed for a paper count. No POS Pro subscription is needed.

How do I receive a delivery into Shopify inventory by barcode?

Open the purchase order in Backroom, tap Receive delivery, and scan each item with the phone camera or a scanner; each scan adds one unit, or type the quantity. Received units are added to Shopify inventory at the chosen location, unit costs can be updated at the same time, and shelf labels can be printed for anything that arrived without a barcode. Partial deliveries leave the rest on order.

How does Backroom decide what to reorder?

Per product variant and location: daily sales velocity over a window you choose (default 60 days) × the supplier's lead time gives the reorder point; velocity × (lead time + your days of cover) gives the target. If on hand plus on order is at or below the reorder point, it suggests the difference, rounded up to the pack size. Per-product minimum and target rules override the maths. Every suggested line shows its reasoning.

Can I import my Stocky data?

Yes. Export purchase orders and SKUs from Stocky as CSV before it shuts down, then upload them in Backroom → Settings → Import. Purchase-order history, received quantities and product costs come across; suppliers are created from your product vendors. Imported history never counts against the free plan's monthly allowance.

Does Backroom change my Shopify inventory on its own?

No. Stock changes only when you receive a delivery or complete a stock take. Suggestions and purchase orders never touch inventory. Every change is recorded with a reference back to the receipt or count.

Does it work with multiple locations and Shopify POS?

Yes. Suggestions, receiving and counts are per location, and Backroom uses the same locations as Shopify POS. It runs inside the Shopify admin on desktop and on a phone, so it can be used on the shop floor.

Can I email a purchase order to my supplier?

Yes. Each supplier can have an order email; one click sends the PO with a PDF attached, from Backroom, and records when it was sent. POs can also be printed, downloaded as PDF or exported as CSV.

What reports does Backroom have?

Dead stock (money sitting on shelves that hasn't sold), sell-through, top earners by margin, days of cover, and a supplier roll-up — over 30, 60, 90 or 365 days, with CSV export. Reports are included on the free plan.

Can an AI assistant like Claude or ChatGPT use Backroom?

Yes. Backroom has a JSON API and an MCP server (https://restocker-production-2027.up.railway.app/mcp). A merchant generates an API key in Settings; an assistant connected with it can answer questions like "what should I reorder from Northwind?", create purchase orders from suggestions, change their status and receive deliveries. Documentation: https://restocker-production-2027.up.railway.app/docs/api.

What does the weekly low-stock email do?

Once a week, on the day and hour you choose, Backroom emails what will run out before its supplier could deliver, grouped by supplier, with a link that opens the suggested order. It also emails the morning a delivery is expected, so it gets scanned in the day it arrives. Both are on by default and can be turned off in Settings.

Does Backroom need my customers' data?

No. It reads order line items (product, quantity, date) to measure sales velocity and stores no customer details. The privacy policy lists exactly what is stored.

What does it cost and how is it billed?

Two plans, both with every feature. Free: 3 purchase orders and 1 stock take a month, unlimited receiving, labels, reports and emails. Standard: $29/month, unlimited, 14-day free trial. Billing is through Shopify; switch or cancel at any time from the Shopify admin.

Does it do inventory transfers between locations?

No, by design. Shopify's native transfers cover that, and Backroom receives against purchase orders at whichever location you choose.

Who makes Backroom?

Savage Solutions Company — one developer. Support email goes to the person who wrote the code, and the app ships most weeks. See the changelog.
