Switching from Stocky

Stocky was the purchasing and stock-count app most Shopify retailers relied on. Backroom covers the same weekly work — suggested orders, purchase orders, receiving deliveries, stock takes — without needing POS Pro, and it imports what you had in Stocky. Here is how to make the move.

Before you lose access to Stocky

Stocky's data lives inside Stocky. Export it first, while you still can. Three files cover everything Backroom can use:

ExportWhere to find it in StockyWhy
Purchase ordersReports → Purchase Orders → CSV (or open a PO → Download → CSV)Your order history, with costs and supplier names. Backroom recreates each PO as history and uses the costs to seed supplier costs.
SKU / variant reportReports → SKU or Variant, include cost, supplier code and min/max → CSVUnit cost, supplier SKU and the min/max levels you set per product.
SuppliersStocky had no supplier export. A short CSV you type up (name, email, phone, lead time) is enough, and the PO export already carries supplier names.Supplier emails and lead times drive Backroom's suggestions and one-click emailing.

Stocktake exports are recognised but not imported: Backroom starts counts fresh from your current Shopify quantities. Keep the files for your records if you want them.

What maps to what

In StockyIn Backroom
Purchase orders (draft, ordered, partial, received)Purchase orders with the same status ladder: draft → ordered → partially received → received → closed. Print, PDF, email to the supplier, CSV.
Suggested orders / demand forecastingFill shelves: reorder point and target per product from sales velocity, the supplier's lead time and your days of cover. One click creates a PO per supplier. Min/max rules override the maths where you set them.
Receive stock (scan or type)Receive delivery on the PO: phone camera or USB/Bluetooth scanner, or type quantities. Received units go into Shopify inventory at the location you choose; update unit costs at the same time.
StocktakesStock takes: count a vendor, product type, location or the whole store; review discrepancies; set Shopify on-hand quantities in one click. Printable count sheet.
SuppliersSuppliers, created automatically from your product vendors on first sync. Add lead time and email; override the supplier per product where a vendor is not the supplier.
Transfers between locationsNot in Backroom. Shopify's own inventory transfers handle this.
Barcode labelsShelf labels from any PO or delivery, with price and barcode, sized for your label printer.
Required POS ProNot required. Backroom runs inside the Shopify admin on any plan, on desktop and phone.

The move, step by step

  1. Export from Stocky — the three files above.
  2. Install Backroom from the Shopify App Store. It syncs your products, stock levels, locations and the last 60 days of order line items (never customer details) and creates a supplier for every product vendor. Start the 14-day trial; nothing is charged until it ends.
  3. Import under Settings → Import. Upload each file, check the preview — how many matched by SKU or barcode, anything unmatched — then confirm. Imports are additive: re-uploading a file updates rather than duplicates, and nothing changes your Shopify stock.
  4. Set lead times and emails under Suppliers. The lead time decides when Backroom tells you to reorder; the email lets you send a PO in one click.
  5. Open Fill shelves. Review the suggested quantities per supplier, tap why? on any line to see the maths, adjust, and create the first purchase orders.

Most stores are ordering again within an afternoon. If your store has little sales history yet, set a minimum stock per product or per vendor under Settings → Ordering rules and Backroom suggests a reorder whenever stock falls below it.

What is different

Purchase orders live in Backroom. Shopify's API has no purchase orders, so they are stored by the app, exportable as CSV at any time, and deleted when you uninstall.

Suggestions explain themselves. Every suggested quantity shows the velocity, reorder point and target behind it, so you can trust it or change it.

Nothing touches your stock on its own. Shopify inventory changes only when you receive a delivery or complete a stock take.

AI assistants can work with it. A JSON API and an MCP server let an assistant check what is running low or draft a purchase order, with a key you generate in Settings. See API & AI assistants.

Questions

Will my old Stocky purchase orders show up? Yes, as history with their lines, costs and status, once imported. They do not change your stock.

Do I need a barcode scanner? No. Your phone camera scans, a USB or Bluetooth scanner works, and you can always type quantities.

Multiple locations? Yes. Suggestions, receiving and counts are all per location.

What does it cost? $29/month after a 14-day free trial, billed through Shopify. One plan, every feature.
